John J. Wood has been named interim vice provost for international education, effective Sept. 1.

Wood, who has served as senior associate vice provost for international education since 2003, will succeed Stephen C. Dunnett, who is stepping down as vice provost. Dunnett will continue to oversee UB programs at the Singapore Institute of Management, Chinese Culture University in Taiwan and Konan University in Japan through August 2019, when he plans to retire from the university.

Wood has been extensively involved in all the functional areas of international education, including overseeing university-wide international affiliations and exchange programs. He works with faculty to develop new international programs, supervises the Study Abroad Programs office and administers the university’s overseas degree programs, including ensuring their compliance with university and accreditation standards.

A leader in international education at UB, Wood is frequently invited to serve on SUNY and university committees. He is convener of UB’s Council on International Studies and Programs, a university-wide faculty advisory group that provides ongoing input to the provost and vice provost on international policies, programs and initiatives.

Wood holds a PhD in English from UB and he has presented and published widely on international education. He has held prominent roles in professional associations, among them the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) and the European Association of International Education (EAIE), and has served as a member-at-large of the Educational Testing Service’s Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Board.
