With the Christmas and New Year’s Day federal holidays falling on Sunday this year, UB will be closed on Monday, Dec. 26, and Monday, Jan. 2, in observance of these holidays.
Employees required to work on these days will earn a compensatory holiday that can be used at a later date.
Many employees have requested or expressed interest in taking time off from Dec. 27 through Dec. 30 and the need for non-essential services is likely to be low on these days. While the university will be open, vice presidents and deans may choose to close their individual units during this time if warranted by operating needs.
Employees who decide to take these days off must charge vacation, personal leave or compensatory time.
State employees who do not have sufficient accruals may request an advance of up to four vacation days or can choose to take the days off without pay. Employees who plan to use the latter option should write a letter to their supervisor indicating the specific dates they wish to take without pay. Supervisors then will prepare a lost time letter and forward it to Human Resources by Dec. 14. Sick leave accruals may not be used.
Research Foundation employees can chose to take the days off without pay. Employees should inform their supervisor of their decision so that the appropriate transaction can be submitted to the Research Foundation in Human Resources by Dec. 14.
Employees who choose to work on these days, even if their particular unit is closed, may do so. The University Libraries will serve as the alternate work site.
