David Wiley, chief academic officer of Lumen Learning, will deliver the keynote address at the annual Genteels’ Excellence in Teaching Conference on Nov. 11.
The conference, presented by the Center for Educational Innovation, will be held in the Student Union Theater, North Campus.
Wiley, education fellow at Creative Commons and adjunct faculty member at Brigham Young University, will explain what open educational resources (OER) are, why they are promising and how to adopt them to improve higher education affordability, student outcomes and breadth of impact.
The morning program — featuring Wiley’s address, a breakout session, a poster session and vendor showcase — will take place from 9 a.m. to noon and is free of charge.
During the afternoon post-conference workshop session, Wiley will lead faculty who have adopted or plan to adopt OERs in place of traditional textbooks through the process of creating their first renewable assignment.
The workshop will be held from 1-3:30 p.m. The charge of $25 for UB faculty, staff and TAs and $35 for non-UB participants.

The annual Genteels’ conference presents topics related to the scholarship of teaching and learning through examples, research and assessment of innovative teaching practices.
It is sponsored by an endowment from retired UB education professor Ron Gentile and his wife, Kay Johnson-Gentile, a retired SUNY Buffalo State faculty member. In addition to their faculty positions, they performed for many years as professional musicians under the stage name The Genteels.
