UB faculty and staff are invited to take part in Cyclovia at UB, a free cycling and street festival taking place on Sunday as part of Opening Weekend activities.

Named for the Spanish word for the closing of streets to automobiles for cyclists and pedestrians, Cyclovia will be held from 3-5 p.m. along Lee Road and on the Special Events Field near the UB Bookstore on the North Campus.

The event begins at 3 p.m. with a group bike ride around the North Campus led by Scott Weber, senior vice provost for academic affairs. The ride will highlight bicycle lanes around campus.

Other activities, beginning at 3:30 p.m., spotlight UB student clubs and community organizations. They include skating demonstrations, a BMX stunt show, yoga instruction, paddling on Lake LaSalle, street art and performance, and bike safety and registration information. UB’s Big Blue food truck also will be on site.

Cyclovia is sponsored by Blackstone LaunchPad at UB, a program that encourages entrepreneurial thinking, and UB Parking and Transportation Services. Co-sponsors are the undergraduate Student Association, UB Sustainability, University Police Department, Campus Living, Outdoor Pursuits, Wellness Education Services, UB Athletics, Campus Life and the Professional Staff Senate.

Participants interested in taking the bike ride are asked to register online. Bikes will be provided to those who do not have them. All registered Cyclovia participants will be entered to win one of 10 one-year Bikeshare memberships.
