UB to host its largest in-person job and internship fair since 2019

In a shift back to normalcy, UB is gearing up to host its largest in-person job and internship fair in more than four years. The STEAM Job + Internship Fair, aimed at students from science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics backgrounds, will take place from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in Alumni Arena.

“The upcoming job and internship fair is the largest we’ve had in at least five years,” says Jenna Hubbard, brand and experience strategy lead at the Career Design Center. “We’re almost at full capacity, expecting around 120-plus employers who are actively recruiting for jobs and internships.”

The list of participating employers includes L3Harris Technologies; GlobalFoundries; Mattel; London Stock Exchange; Kiewit; Ingersoll Rand; Regeneron Pharmaceuticals; National Security Agency; Bureau of Diplomatic Affairs, U.S. Department of State; Siemens Energy; General Mills; M&T Bank; and Turner Construction.

Every employer attending must have an active job or internship posting.

“This ensures that every company present is genuinely interested in recruiting UB students,” says Hubbard, adding that this detailed vetting process promises genuine opportunities for students and precludes the presence of employers who are merely “browsing” for potential hires.

To help students prepare for the career fair, the Career Design Center has arranged a series of specialized skillshops and pop-up events across campus. The center also offers resume and online profile review appointments, as well as the VMock online resume review platform and the Big Interview mock interview training course. The skillshop and pop-up schedule:

●      Making the Most of the Job + Internship Fair Skillshop: 4 p.m., Sept. 26, Pride and Tradition Room, 330 Student Union. Attendees will get tips for attending the fair, along with how to follow up later with recruiters.

●      Tic Tac Talk Pop-up: 2 p.m., Sept. 26, Student Union lobby. Students can practice their pitches to recruiters at the fair. Career design consultants and employers will be available to help students prepare.

●      Interview Roulette Pop-up: 2-4 p.m., Oct. 2, Student Union lobby. Students can join a game of interview question roulette to practice common interview questions for last-minute preparation before the fair begins the next day.

Hubbard also notes that several employers have expressed interest in conducting on-campus interviews the week of the job fair.

"Students might receive interview requests right after the event, so we’re also preparing them for that possibility," she says.

With an extensive list of recruiters and specialized pre-fair preparation events, UB is pulling out all stops to ensure that students have the best opportunities to secure their future, according to Hubbard.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to meet potential employers and gain lifelong interviewing and networking skills,” says Trung Nguyen, assistant vice president for student engagement and success, and interim director of the Career Design Center. “The Career Design Center is excited to welcome employers and students alike to this important on-campus event.”

Adds Hubbard: “This fair marks a significant milestone as our first large in-person job fair since 2019.”
