First Annual Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine Symposium

Fellow George Techiryan.

The First Annual Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine Symposium took place on June 8-9, 2017. The symposium is a showcase for the excellence our students. The two-day event fostered interactions between faculty and students from diverse backgrounds - biology, medicine, bioengineering and Roswell Park Cancer Institute - enriching our research efforts in the use of stem cells for disease treatment.

Keynote Speakers

  • Ali Brivanlou, PhD, Rockefeller University: "Self-Organization of Human Embryonic Stem Cells and Human Embryos"
  • Steven Goldman, MD, PhD, University of Rochester: "Stem Cell based treatment and modeling of glial disease"
  • Gordana Novakovic, PhD, Columbia University: "Engineering Human Tissues"
  • Sean Palecek, PhD, University of Wisconsin - Madison:"Biomanufacturing Cardiovascular Cells from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells"
  • Robert Sackstein, MD, PhD Harvard University: "GPS for Stem Cells: Creating a Pathway to Cure"
  • David Schaffer, PhD, University of California Berkeley: "Molecular Elucidation and Engineering of Stem Cell Fate Decision"

Poster Winners

The poster sessions included 18 participants, along with lunch for guests and judges. Awards for best poster were evaluated based on student presenter communication skills and showcased the high quality of research.

  • Christian Gluck, MD, PhD Candidate, Department of Biochemistry, presenting author of: " Molecular Dissection of the Oncogenic Role of ETS1 and its network in head and Neck Squamous Carcinoma"
  • Arezoo Momeni, PhD Candidate, Chemical and Biological Engineering, presenting author of:"Cell Surface Glycoengineering Improves Selectin-Mediated Adhesion of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) and Cardiosphere-Derived Cells (cdcs): Pilot Validation in Porcine Ischemia-Reperfusion Model"
  • Aref Shahini, PhD Candidate, Chemical and Biological Engineering, presenting author of:"NANOG Restores the Myogenic Differentiation Potential of Senescent Myoblasts"
