The goal of the Retrospective Drug Utilization Review (RetroDUR) team is to ensure New York State Medicaid patients are receiving optimal, evidence-based medication therapy.
The program performs retrospective drug utilization reviews. This service is similar to medication therapy management. The clinical pharmacist team reviews outpatient prescription profiles in order to ensure that prescriptions are appropriate, medically necessary, and not likely to result in adverse medical outcomes. The team uses the most current evidence-based medical information to make bias-free decisions. Prescribers and/or pharmacies are notified if any potential issues are identified. The ultimate goal of the program is to improve pharmacotherapy through education.
In addition to reviews, the RetroDUR team from UB SPPS performs outcome analyses. These analyses, which have included targeted interventions to improve antibiotic prescribing practices and influenza vaccination rates in high-risk populations, evaluate the effectiveness of RetroDUR interventions. Additional interventions have addressed potential duplication of diabetic therapy, duplication of NSAID therapy, and adverse event education.
