Pharmacy Services Partnership

In 2006, the New York State Department of Health Medicaid Services established a partnership with the State University of New York.  One of the primary areas of the NYSDOH initiative is with the University at Buffalo in the area of pharmacy to provide an evidence based, non-commercial source of the latest objective information regarding pharmaceuticals in order to improve the quality of health care delivery to Medicaid beneficiaries.

Prospective Drug Utilization Review

The State University of New York (SUNY) along with University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences began a partnership with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Program in 2008. The goal of the partnership is to provide evidence-based, non-commercial clinical reviews coupled with academic analysis of drug utilization to improve safe and cost-effective use of medications in the NY Medicaid population.

Retrospective Drug Utilization Review

The goal of the Retrospective Drug Utilization Review (RetroDUR) team is to ensure New York State Medicaid patients are receiving optimal, evidence-based medication therapy.

The New York State Medicaid Prescriber Education Program (NYSMPEP) assists prescribers in making therapeutic recommendations in accordance with best practices through the delivery of evidence-based educational materials.

    The UB Medication Cost and Value team promotes effective utilization of NYS Medicaid resources by advising the Department of Health (DOH) on the management of high-cost drugs. UB clinical pharmacists and data analysts collaborate with partners at DOH to complete in-depth, evidence-based reviews of selected products, incorporating a wide range of clinical and pharmacoeconomic considerations.
