The New York Times quotes Kenneth Regan in a story on the ongoing chess cheating scandal involving grandmaster Hans Niemann, who admitted to cheating in some online matches but never during face-to-face matches. Regan said Niemann should “make a fuller statement.” “His confession is insufficient,” he said. “His words are not clear. I do think he bears that responsibility.” But, he added, “the entire effect — the pile-on effect from the ‌internet — ‌ is not merited.”
