BUFFALO, N.Y. – The annual UB Run for Smiles will return to the University at Buffalo South Campus for the fifth year, drawing more than 700 runners to raise awareness about affordable health care services offered through the UB School of Dental Medicine.

The only race held on the UB South Campus, the event is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, outside of Harriman Hall.

Before the race, guests are welcome to attend a health fair and receive free screenings and consultations from faculty, staff and students in UB’s health sciences schools. The fair will begin at 8:30 a.m. outside of Harriman Hall.

The post-race party – also outside Harriman – includes food, live music and field games, and is free and open to all.

Proceeds from the 5K race will support the Counseling, Advocacy, Referral, Education and Service (CARES) program and Buffalo Outreach and Community Assistance (BOCA), both UB dental programs dedicated to providing oral health care to underserved populations.

To date, the race, which is organized entirely by UB dental students, has raised nearly $50,000.

“This race was started by Dr. Anna Bailey five years ago to raise oral health awareness in the Buffalo community. It continues to grow each year and helps patients get the care that they deserve,” says Cole Staines, race co-director and UB dental student.

The cost to register is $20. After April 21, the cost is $25. Runners can sign up at http://raceroster.com/events/2016/7746/ub-dental-5k-run-for-smiles.
