Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo will officially open the new Gates Vascular Institute/Clinical and Translational Research Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

When: May 24 at 11 a.m.

Where: In the fifth floor atrium of the Gates Vascular Institute/Clinical and Translational Research Center building at Goodrich and Ellicott Streets on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

Why: The Gates Vascular Institute is a first-of-its-kind, multi-dimensional medical facility with four out of 10 floors focused on cardiac, stroke and related vascular care. Also included in this facility is the largest Emergency Department in Western New York, featuring 53 private rooms and many patient-centered touches to create a safe, healing environment for more than 60,000 visits annually.

UB's Clinical and Translational Research Center is a 170,000-square-foot research facility on the top five floors of the building. The CTRC's research -- done in collaboration with physicians and scientists in the Buffalo area -- will help lead to new medical breakthroughs and innovative treatments.

The opening of the $291 million joint Kaleida Health-UB building marks a new era in patient care, biomedical research and medical education in Western New York.

-- Nirav R. Shah, MD, MPH, commissioner, New York State Department of Health

-- L. Nelson Hopkins, MD, professor and chair of the UB Department of Neurosurgery and chief of neurosurgery at Kaleida Health

-- Timothy F. Murphy, MD, director of UB's CTRC and senior associate dean for clinical and translational research in the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
