BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Karl D. Fiebelkorn of Getzville, associate dean for student affairs and professional relations in the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, received the 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award at the pharmacy school's recent commencement ceremony.

The Teacher of the Year program recognizes a UB pharmacy faculty member who has demonstrated excellence, innovation and effectiveness in the doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree program, the bachelor's degree program in pharmaceutical sciences or the graduate program (M.S. and Ph.D.) through the development of new courses, modification or improvement of existing courses, enhanced student learning opportunities in and outside the classroom, or by promoting student learning with various pedagogical and active learning approaches as it applies to the educational mission of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

An innovative educator, Fiebelkorn has used the TV reality show "The Apprentice" as a teaching tool. Students watched the show and applied the business concepts from the show to pharmacy business principles.

He was selected as the 2002 Pharmacist of the Year by the Pharmacists' Association of Western New York (PAWNY) and served as chair of PAWNY for 2002-03.
