Students Honored at UB Medical School Commencement

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fifty-eight graduates of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences received awards at the school's recent commencement ceremony.

Among the recipients are 18 students who received multiple awards:

• Esmé E. Finlay of Ithaca, the Gilbert M. Beck Memorial Prize in Psychiatry for excellence in psychiatry, the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Award presented to a woman who graduates first in her class, a Dr. Cyrenius Chapin Award recognizing achievement in clinical sciences, the Harry B. and Loretta A. Jordan Award for investigation in neoplastic disease and the Maimonides Medical Society Award recognizing the most outstanding academic performance coupled with wisdom and compassion

• Laura Cinski of Cheektowaga, the John Watson Award in Medicine recognizing enthusiasm for and commitment to scholarship in medicine, the Bernard H. Smith Memorial Award in Clinical Neurology, the Department of Surgery Chair's Award for academic excellence in surgery and a Janet M. Glasgow Citation recognizing academic excellence in women

• Danielle M. Dorsaneo of Kenmore, the Morris & Sadie Stein Neuroanatomy Award for excellence in neuroanatomy, the Gordon S. Ehrlich Award for demonstration of significant understanding of childhood disease, a Janet M. Glasgow Citation recognizing academic excellence in women and the Humanism in Medicine Award

• Sara I. Kaprove of Williamsville, a Janet M. Glasgow Citation recognizing academic excellence in women; the Philip P. Sang Memorial Award recognizing ability to relate well to patients, faculty and staff; a Dr. Cyrenius Chapin Award recognizing achievement in clinical sciences, and the Dr. Austin Flint Award for achievement in the basic sciences

• Lisa dos Santos of Greenlawn, the Clyde L. Randall Society Award in gynecology-obstetrics, a Research Honors Award, a Janet M. Glasgow Citation recognizing academic excellence in women and a Dr. Cyrenius Chapin Award recognizing achievement in clinical sciences

• Robert A. Bermel of East Amherst, the American Academy of Neurology Student Prize for Excellence, a Thesis Honors Award and the Bacelli Award for most outstanding research by a medical student

• Nathalie Dauphin of Rosedale, a Research Honors Award, the Robin M. Bannerman Memorial Research Award for most meritorious research in biomedical science initiated in a summer research program and the National Medical Association Award for excellence in scholarship, leadership and commitment of community service

• Andrew M. Freeman of Holbrook, a Research Honors Award, the Ester Ponce Grimaldi, M.D., Memorial Award recognizing compassion for patients in primary care and the Bernhardt & Sophie Gottlieb Award recognizing expertise in areas outside medicine

• Dorothy H. Hendricks of Rochester, the David K. Miller Prize in Medicine for demonstrating Miller's approach to caring for the sick: competence, humility and humanity; the Dr. Thomas J. Guttuso Award for academic excellence in ophthalmology, and a Janet M. Glasgow Citation recognizing academic excellence in women

• Rebecca L. Dwyer of Dansville, The American Academy of Family Physicians President's Award for excellence in family practice and the Elizabeth Award for unusual compassion and noteworthy personal and professional sense of integrity and ethics

• Alfred Frontera, Jr., of Kingston, the Bernard H. Smith Memorial Award in Clinical Neurology and the James Platt White Society Award for leadership qualities that personify those of White's - foresight, intellectual vigor and moral courage

• Sean Garvin of Bellmore, the Lieberman Award recognizing interest and aptitude in anesthesiology and a Research Honors Award

• Deborah Kulick of Niagara Falls, the Emilie Davis Rodenberg Memorial Award recognizing academic excellence in the study of diabetes and its complications, and the Farney P. Wurlitzer Prize for academic excellence in psychiatry

• Heather K. Lehman of Grand Island, the Buffalo Pediatric Society Award for outstanding pediatric skills and Generalist Scholars Recognition

• Margo K. McKenna of Olcott, the Norman Haber Award for demonstration of excellence in otolaryngology and a Research Honors Award

• Limin Shang of Buffalo, the Dean's Award for Outstanding Dissertation Research and the Robert J. McIsaac Award in Pharmacology & Toxicology

• Gerard Silva of Staten Island, the Medical Society of the State of New York Award for outstanding community service and the Humanism in Medicine Award

• Jennifer L. Trask of Buffalo, the Children's Hospital Prize for excellence in understanding disease in childhood and Generalist Scholars Recognition

• Kit Ling Cheng of New York, the Stephen J. Paolini Award for exemplifying the qualities of dedication and compassion that Paolini personified

• Danielle M. Conley of Orchard Park, the Frederick B. Wilkes Pediatric Award recognizing the graduating student entering a career in pediatrics who has best exemplified Wilkes' skills and dedication to patients

• Samanth E. Easley of Buffalo, a Research Honors Award

• Lisa E. Esler-Brauer of Mayfield, a Janet M. Glasgow Citation recognizing academic excellence in women

• David R. Fintak of Lexington, S.C., the E.J. Weisenheimer Award for excellence in scholarship and patient care in ophthalmology

• Zair Fishkin of Williamsville, the Dr. Benjamin E. and Lila Obletz Prize for outstanding performance in orthopaedic surgery
