  • UB Students Called to Serve in Active Duty

    Any day now, University at Buffalo student and National Guard reservist Mark Costa expects to be called to duty in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He doesn't know where he'll be assigned, but he knows he'll go very soon. When Costa departs, postponing the final semester of his graduate studies in library and information sciences, he'll join approximately 25 UB students already called to duty by all branches of the U.S. military.

    Look around any hospital, clinic or doctor's office and most of the nurses you see will not be people of color. This situation does not bode well for the future of nursing or for health care, as the general population becomes more diverse and the need for multicultural understanding more crucial. Providing that understanding is the goal of a new curriculum in the master's-degree program for family nurse practitioners in the University at Buffalo.
