  • Margaret G. McGlynn, MBA '83 & BS '82, of Flourtown, Pa.

    Margaret McGlynn, who recently retired after a 26-year career at Merck & Company, has made a significant impact not only within the University at Buffalo community, but globally as well. Formerly president of the pharmaceutical company's global vaccine and infectious disease (ID) division, she also served as president of the company's U.S. hospital and specialty division.

    The Harlem Radiology Center had a modest beginning in 1987 when Janet Sung, MD, and her husband, John, after pooling their assets, selling their apartment and taking out a loan, greeted their first 32 patients.
  • Marc A. Adler, MA '83, MBA '82 & BA '79, of Williamsville, N.Y.

    Marc Adler's volunteer time commitment to the UB Alumni Association has been extraordinary since he first served on the achievement awards committee in 2001. Since then, he has volunteered at virtually every type of alumni event, including while fulfilling his two-year term as president of the UBAA (also a volunteer position), from 2007-09.
  • Wolf Blitzer, BA '70, of Bethesda, Md.

    Wolf Blitzer, CNN's award-winning lead political anchor, hosts "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," the network's political news program. One of the most insightful journalists in America today, Blitzer began his career in 1972 with the Reuters News Agency in Tel Aviv, and shortly thereafter became a Washington, D.C., correspondent for The Jerusalem Post. After more than 15 years of reporting from the nation's capital, Blitzer joined CNN in 1990 as the network's military-affairs correspondent at the Pentagon.

    The University at Buffalo has been named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.
  • Clifford C. Furnas Memorial Award: Norman R. McCombs, BS '68, of Tonawanda, N.Y.

    Norman R. McCombs has a mechanical engineering degree from the University at Buffalo. He has been involved in research and development all of his professional life. He founded the Xorbox Corporation in 1973, which evolved into AirSep Corporation in 1986.
  • Laura L. Aikin, BFA '86, of Basiglio, Italy

    Internationally acclaimed soprano and Clarence native Laura Aikin was discovered at 15 by Jay Anstee, a voice master's student at the University at Buffalo, while Aikin was auditioning for a school musical. Anstee introduced her to UB professor Gary Burgess, who was her voice teacher for the next seven years.

    Gary Baker, one of 12 to be awarded the 2009 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, is a leader in the synthesis and application of environmentally benign solvents, including supercritical fluids and ionic liquids, a new type of solvent composed entirely of ions.
