In a timely twist of fate, given the recent earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand, Philip Berke, noted specialist in planning for earthquakes and author of major books on urban planning and natural hazard mitigation, will present the University at Buffalo's 2011 Clarkson Chair in Planning Lecture March 23 at 5:30 p.m. in 301 Crosby Hall on the UB South Campus.

Several University at Buffalo graduate and professional schools -- including UB engineering, medicine, law, business and nursing schools -- were recognized as among the best in the country by U.S. News and World Report in its annual ranking of "America's Best Graduate Schools," released today.

The design of next-generation nuclear power plants and other critical energy facilities will undoubtedly be influenced by the Japanese tsunami and its devastating effects on Japan's nuclear reactors, says Michael C. Constantinou, PhD, professor of civil, structural and environmental engineering at the University at Buffalo.

We are all shocked and deeply saddened by the terrible destruction caused today by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to those affected by the disaster and especially to our students, faculty, and staff from Japan and their families, as well as our many Japanese alumni, colleagues, and friends.

For some college students, spring break means major partying in Punta Cana or the Alps, but 41 University at Buffalo students will spend their March 12-20 break cleaning up parks, feeding the hungry, aiding the elderly, restoring damaged buildings, building homes and assisting with neighborhood projects.

The magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the coast of northern Japan and the tsunami it triggered demonstrate the need for an integrated approach to preparing for, mitigating and responding to extreme events, say researchers at the University at Buffalo, MCEER and the UB Center for GeoHazards Studies, who spoke to media in a briefing Friday on UB's North Campus. Scientists and engineers at the University at Buffalo and UB's MCEER (Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research) will be available to discuss with media the powerful magnitude 8.9 earthquake that struck the northern coast of Japan and has triggered tsunamis and evacuations throughout half the world.

Bloomberg Businessweek has ranked the University at Buffalo School of Management as one of the nation's "Best Undergraduate Business Programs of 2011."

Matching funds of up to $25,000 are available to help small and medium-sized companies in Western New York and surrounding areas create and retain jobs with assistance from the University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences through the Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program.

Five faculty members representing dentistry, medicine and the social sciences have been named University at Buffalo Distinguished Professors for 2011. The appointments are effective Sept. 1.
