A consortium of over 15 regional organizations has launched Bright Buffalo Niagara (Bright), a community-driven initiative that will host a series of events for investors, entrepreneurs and other professionals looking to build a high-tech economy across the Great Lakes region, including in Southern Ontario. Bright, led by the University at Buffalo's New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, grew out of the Explore Buffalo Niagara Investor and Entrepreneur High-Tech Forum, an annual event that began in 2009.

Everyday, consumers and their healthcare providers make decisions about medications, diagnostic tests and other medical interventions based on risk statistics. According to the findings of an international study published today, certain methods of presenting these risk statistics are more persuasive than others.

The design of next-generation nuclear power plants and other critical energy facilities will undoubtedly be influenced by the Japanese tsunami and its devastating effects on Japan's nuclear reactors, says Michael C. Constantinou, PhD, professor of civil, structural and environmental engineering at the University at Buffalo.

For some college students, spring break means major partying in Punta Cana or the Alps, but 41 University at Buffalo students will spend their March 12-20 break cleaning up parks, feeding the hungry, aiding the elderly, restoring damaged buildings, building homes and assisting with neighborhood projects.

The magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the coast of northern Japan and the tsunami it triggered demonstrate the need for an integrated approach to preparing for, mitigating and responding to extreme events, say researchers at the University at Buffalo, MCEER and the UB Center for GeoHazards Studies, who spoke to media in a briefing Friday on UB's North Campus.
