As an environmental sociologist,  Lourdes Vera's research centers on community-driven approaches to environmental monitoring and data justice. She has partnered with citizen scientists to monitor air contaminants next to oil and gas operations and now works with communities in Buffalo, NY to test soil for lead and other heavy metals. 

As a member of the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative, she has also co-designed digital tools and methods to archive vulnerable federal environmental data and make it more accessible and actionable for civic engagement.
