Sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery; hands-only CPR/AED training in historically underserved communities
Bisson is an orthopedic surgeon, who specializes in knee and shoulder arthroscopic surgery. He studies ways to improve treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and was co-investigator on a major research study that demonstrates that exercise and physical therapy ease knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis and meniscal tears. He is the medical director for two professional sports teams and has over 50 seasons of professional sports experience.
As medical director of the Buffalo Bills, Bisson led the on-field medical team that provided care for Damar Hamlin following his cardiac arrest during a game in January, 2023. Bisson and other members of the Bills’ medical staff then received the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2023 ESPY Awards.
With the spotlight on sudden cardiac arrest, Bisson built a team to address barriers to bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation/automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) training in underserved communities. With grant funding, they have now trained more than 30,000 Western New York student-athletes and their families in bystander CPR/AED use. For this work, the NFL Physicians Society awarded him the Arthur C. Rettig Award for Academic Excellence.
