Heather M. Gardiner is an expert on health equity, community engaged research and the social, cultural and communication factors that shape people's health. She can discuss health inequities, medical mistrust, patient-provider communication, organ and tissue donation, kidney transplantation, and community-based approaches to improving health care.

Gardiner leads multiple research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and focused on how communication between transplant providers and patients can increase equity in live donor kidney transplantation.  She also collaborates on projects to expand equitable access to care, improve patient decision-making, and understand and improve addiction treatment.  

As director of the University at Buffalo's Community Health Equity Research Institute, she works with health systems, community organizations and patients to develop community-driven, research-based solutions that improve health for underserved populations.
