Eating disorders, substance use-related education, federal regulatory requirements for substance use, graduate nursing education
Alyssa Hamel is a board-certified psychiatric provider, educator and researcher who can speak to the media about eating disorders and substance use-related education. The latter focuses on preventing the initiation and misuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, particularly among youth, while also providing tools for awareness, harm reduction and treatment for the general public.
Hamel led enhancements to the University at Buffalo School of Nursing's core “3P” courses - pharmacology, pathophysiology, and physical assessment. She integrated substance use content into these foundational courses, ensuring its incorporation across all advanced practice specialties, including family, adult-gerontology, psychiatric-mental health, and nurse anesthesia.
Hamel can speak on the early adoption of federal substance use education requirements for providers. She can also comment on how evidence-based knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding substance use disorders, eating disorders and behavioral health fit into existing advanced practice nursing specialties, and how they affect student attitudes and stigma related to care.
Hamel owns a private practice working with individuals with disordered eating and comorbid conditions. She serves as co-chair of the Academy for Eating Disorders’ Professionals & Recovery special interest group and as an ambassador for the Eating Disorders Coalition.
