The School of Public Health and Health Professions and UB Accessibility Resources are teaming up with the Office of Inclusive Excellence for an event next month that will showcase campus and community-based organizations that support disabled communities.
This is the third year the event, Through the Lens of Public Health: Engaging with Community-Based Accessibility Resources, will be held. Free and open to the public, the event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 14 and will be delivered both in person in the Center for Tomorrow on the North Campus and via Zoom. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for those attending in person. All participants are asked to register online in advance.
“There are a vast number of organizations on campus and locally for students and community members that offer services for free or at low cost. These services provide connection and community for individuals, as well as job and living support that is crucial to overall well-being,” says Hannah Premo, assistant director of programming for Accessibility Resources, part of the Office of the Vice President for Student Life.
The event will feature a panel of students who will share their experiences in navigating these resources, followed by a community panel. UB and community-based organizations will also be tabling at the event, providing additional information on services available to students and community members who have a disability.
“We hope that participants also make connections with other people in the area to build out their own support networks as they navigate career options and independent living,” says Premo.
SPHHP began offering the program in 2023 out of a desire to see more resource-sharing events focused on less represented communities that would also be of interest to a wider audience, explains Ebehitale Imobhio, assistant director of equity, diversity, inclusion and community engagement in the School of Public Health and Health Professions.
