The U.S. News and World report released its annual rankings for 2021, and the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering ranked 33 among civil engineering programs in the United States, improving three spots over its ranking for the previous year.

George C. Lee, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering was recognized by the International Association of Bridge Earthquake Engineering (IABEE).
“We were able to develop a methodology to collect data that helps structural engineers define the design fuel load,” says Esther Saula, a junior civil engineering student.
Unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings are vulnerable to earthquakes, but often house critical community infrastructure like schools and fire departments. SUNY Distinguished Professor Michel Bruneau and associate professors Kallol Sett and Andreas Stavridis (lead PI) are funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to enhance the seismic performance of these buildings.
The National Academy of Construction (NAC) recognized Dan D'Angelo (BS '83) for his "significant contributions to the effectiveness of the engineering and construction industry."
Students in associate professor Andreas Stavridis’ reinforced concrete design class had a chance to experience something most undergraduate students do not: seeing the beams they designed and built put to the test.
“Part of it is the practicality. We learn all about theory, but we don’t actually see it put into practice,” says Esteban Orellana, a senior civil engineering student, “this was a good opportunity to actually see it for ourselves.”
