U.S. News and World report ranks individual departments differently than schools and colleges. The ranking for schools and colleges considers quality assessment, faculty resources, research activities and student selectivity. The ranking for individual academic departments is based solely on peer assessment.

One-hundred and fifty-one civil engineering programs were included in the survey, and UB’s civil engineering program finished inside the top 35. “While peer assessments sometimes lack hard metrics, it is an honor to be recognized this highly by our peer institutions,” says Department chair Joseph Atkinson, “the commitment from faculty and staff will hopefully help the Department move up these rankings, while providing a world-class environment for students.”

The Department’s environmental engineering program also ranked inside the top 60 programs. The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ ranking improved by four spots moving up to 59th in the country.
