Oren Lyons

Department of American Studies

SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of American Studies, Oren Lyons is a Faithkeeper of the Turtle Clan and member of the Onondaga Nation Council of Chiefs of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. He is also a founding member of the Native American Studies program at UB. Throughout his esteemed career, Lyons has been a tireless advocate for environmental protections and the rights of Indigenous people. He has spoken in many forums throughout the world, including at the United Nations and summits in London, Moscow, Tokyo, Brazil and South Africa. In addition, Lyons is an All-American Lacrosse Hall of Famer and honorary chairman of the Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team. Lyons in the recipient of many prestigious awards and honors including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2022.
