BA in Philosophy / JD in Law

Build a strong foundation for legal study and practice

The BA in Philosophy / JD in Law pathway at the University at Buffalo is designed for students who know they want to become lawyers and want a rigorous intellectual foundation before entering law school. You will study philosophy to strengthen your reasoning, writing and ethical analysis, then transition directly into the UB School of Law to complete your Juris Doctor.

At UB, this accelerated pathway allows qualified students to earn both degrees in six years.

Why choose the Philosophy / JD pathway at UB?

Law is built on argument, interpretation and judgment. Philosophy trains you in all three.

This pathway is a strong fit if you want to:

  • Prepare intentionally for law school from your first year
  • Build advanced skills in logic and structured argument
  • Study ethics, justice and political philosophy
  • Strengthen reading, writing and analytical precision
  • Complete your undergraduate and law degrees in an accelerated format

UB offers a distinctive advantage. You complete a full philosophy major before transitioning into the UB School of Law, allowing you to enter your JD program with deep preparation in reasoning and ethical analysis.

Philosophy majors have some of the highest scores on law school entrance exams because of their training in logic and critical thinking. More importantly, they enter law school prepared for the intensity of legal study.
