A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at North Presbyterian Church, 300 North Forest Road, Williamsville, for Brenda P. Haughey, associate professor emeritus in the School of Nursing who died Sept. 19. She was 75.

Haughey joined the UB nursing faculty as an assistant professor in 1981 after serving as an assistant professor of nursing and sociology at D’Youville College. She was promoted to associate professor in 1991 and also held positions as an assistant, then associate professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, now the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health in the School of Public Health and Health Professions.

She also served as head of graduate education in the School of Nursing.

Her early research focused on stress and cardiac arrhythmias, but with the advent of AIDS in the 80s she turned her attention to the attitudes of health care professionals toward AIDS patients and to the health practices of student nurses, including promoting health behaviors such as smoking cessation.

She retired from UB in 2000.

Haughey received a BS and MS in nursing from Boston University and a PhD in sociology from UB.
