Libraries to digitize historic issues of Buffalo News

To preserve information and images contained within historic newspapers, the UB Libraries will reformat and digitize 150 microfilm reels — close to 150,000 images — containing issues of The Buffalo Evening News published from 1905-15.

The initiative, The Buffalo Evening News Reformatting Project, is supported by a nearly $23,000 Access and Innovation Grant from the Western New York Library Resources Council.

The grant will fund part three of the project, during which the UB Libraries will partner with the Northern New York Library Network to digitize and catalog the images. After completion, the issues will be added to the New York State Historic Newspapers website, a free archive of historic newspapers in the state.

“Continuing this digitization initiative will give us a more complete historical picture and improve access to a key component of Western New York history,” says Maureen Grice, visiting assistant librarian in the UB Libraries.

The project is scheduled for completion in March 2022.
