Timothy Scarella, staff psychiatrist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston and an instructor at Harvard Medical School, will deliver the 19th Annual Lawrence and Nancy Golden Lecture in Mind-Body Medicine presented by the Department of Medicine in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Scarella’s lecture, titled “Health Anxiety and ‘Unexplained’ Symptoms,” will take place at noon Oct. 7 in Room 2120 A&B in the Jacobs School.

Lunch will be served.

Scarella, associate training director of the BIDMC Harvard Psychiatry Residency Training Program, specializes in the evaluation and treatment of health anxiety and somatic symptom disorders.

In addition to seeing patients on the Consultation Liaison and Ambulatory services at BIDMC, he teaches and supervises residents in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, and has worked with residents on scholarly projects involving resident wellness and educational curricula.

Scarella is the recipient of the Henry G. Altman Award for Excellence in Medical Education, the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring at BIDMC, and the Faculty Teaching Award for the Harvard-Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program.

The Lawrence and Nancy Golden Lectureship on Mind-Body Medicine was established in 2001 to expand the traditional medical model to a bio-psycho-social and spiritual model of care. Mind-body medicine focuses on the interactions among the physical body and the thoughts, beliefs and emotions related to health.
