UB to stage full-scale emergency exercise

Published July 23, 2019

UB’s emergency management department, in collaboration with local, state and federal emergency responders, will conduct a full-scale exercise designed to ensure coordinated, timely and effective response and recovery to a campus crisis.

The exercise activity will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 25 in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the Gratwick Basic Science Building, 99 High St. in Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC).

An innovative feature of the exercise will be a collaboration between UB, Roswell Park, Kaleida Health and BNMC. A key goal of the collaboration will focus on effective communication between multiple agencies and developing a coordinated public information strategy during a crisis response.

Additionally, the exercise will simulate activation of the university’s crisis response plan, evaluate communications between multiple law enforcement and emergency responders, and assess effective coordination of on-scene response and resource management.

There will be significant law enforcement, fire and emergency service present during the exercise. In order to avoid any confusion, the public is being notified ahead of time. The exercise is closed to the campus community and the general public.

Information regarding any operation disruptions or road closures during this exercise can be found at www.emergency.buffalo.edu

UB units participating in the exercise include University Police; Emergency Management; Environment, Health and Safety; University Communications; and the Incident Management Team.

Local agencies taking part in the exercise include American Medical Response, Buffalo Fire Department, Buffalo Police Department, Erie County Emergency Services, Erie County Department of Health, Kaleida Health (Buffalo General Medical Center and Oishei Children’s Hospital), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Police, Roswell Park, BNMC and the FBI.
