“Confronting Violence: Improving Women’s Lives,” a traveling exhibition produced by the National Library of Medicine that celebrates the pivotal role nurses played in mobilizing the medical profession to tackle the problem of domestic violence, will open at UB’s Health Sciences Library (HSL) with a special event on Feb. 7.

The open house, from 3-5 p.m. in 130 Abbott Hall on the South Campus, will feature talks by Judith Olin, director of the Family Violence and Women’s Rights Clinic in the UB School of Law, and Mary Murphy, executive director of the Family Justice Center of Erie County.

Olin will discuss “The Influence of Dr. Jacqueline Campbell, RN, PhD, on the creation of the High Risk Team Model.” Murphy will talk about the Family Justice Center and its new ReachOut initiative that includes a website with videos describing how to have a conversation with someone you suspect may be in an abusive relationship.

The open house also will feature brief tours of the HSL and its historic Austin Flint Reading Room, as well the library’s Robert L. Brown History of Medicine Collection, which includes nursing books and artifacts.

Refreshments will be served.

The Confronting Violence” exhibition features six large panels displaying images, manuscripts and records that tell the stories of the nurses who witnessed the effects of domestic violence and campaigned for change. An online version of the exhibit can be found on the National Library of Medicine’s website.

The traveling exhibition, located in the lobby of the HSL, is on view through March 2.

Those attending the open house should RSVP to pmrose@buffalo.edu or call 716-829-5722.
