Can libraries save scholarship?

Jeffrey Spies, co-leader of SHARE and co-founder of the Center for Open Science, will speak on the critical role libraries play in supporting open academic research at a talk on Nov. 30 sponsored by the UB Libraries.

The discussion will explore how libraries — one of the few naturally interdisciplinary locations on a campus — can become hubs of innovation and collaboration, and detail the various risks to scholarship, such as centuries-old publishing practices and the increasing prices of publications.

Libraries, says Spies, are positioned to solve this crisis through their expertise in sharing and preservation.

The talk, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 2-3 p.m. in 6 Norton Hall, North Campus. Click here for more details or to register.

SHARE and the Center for Open Science are higher education initiatives whose missions are to maximize research impact by making information widely accessible, discoverable and reusable.

Spies will also serve as the keynote speaker for the New York Digital Humanities Symposium, taking place Dec. 1 in the UB Center for Educational Innovation.
