Immigrant holiday ceremonies focus of next edition of ‘Screen Projects’

Common objects found at immigrant holiday ceremonies are the focus of the UB Art Galleries’ next Screen Projects public art video installation.

“Twilight Galaxies,” by Ethiopian mixed media artist Ezra Wube, is on view Nov. 1 through Jan. 30 outside the Second Floor Gallery of the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts in the hallway across from the elevator.

In his nearly eight-minute video, Wube creates a bright and ever-changing world full of color and delight. Through mass migration and globalization, the transitory nature of these immigrant holiday ceremonies encourage everyday objects — the pop-up tent, folding table, plastic cutlery and cups — to become icons that are not culturally specific.

Through stop-motion and motion-animated segments, “Twilight Galaxies” combines real and imagined galaxies with specific objects and sounds that often go unnoticed but are now points of reference for possible utopias created through interaction, exchange and motion.

The Screen Projects initiative rotates every four to six weeks and features a variety of short videos from regional, national and international artists.
