UB hosts events for Suicide Prevention Week

UB is planning and taking part in activities from Sept. 8-13 to mark Suicide Prevention Week. Here are some of the offerings.

  • Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention. It will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 8 (registration begins at 8:30 a.m.) at Delaware Park near the Buffalo Zoo. Join the UB Walkin’ Team, create your own team, or make a donation at www.afsp.org/buffalo.
  • Wellness Activity Day, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 11, Student Union Lobby. It will feature an art activity, yoga, a nutrition demonstration, mental health awareness resources, and games and prizes.
  • Screening of “The S Word,” 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Sept. 12, Student Union Lobby and Theater. “The S Word” follows a suicide-attempt survivor as she finds fellow survivors and documents their unguarded stories of courage, insight, pain and humor.
  • Suicide Prevention Training: Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), 10 a.m. to noon, Sept. 15, 210 Student Union. This training assists participants in learning to recognize the warning signs of suicide and ways to effectively help someone in need. Register online.
