A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. April 25 in Unitarian Universalist Church of Buffalo, 695 Elmwood Ave., for James M. “Jamie” Shiffner, a longtime clinical psychologist and UB faculty member.

Shiffner died Jan. 2 of a stroke in New York City, where he was visiting family. He was 62.

Born in Syracuse, Shiffner graduated from Cornell University in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree with honors in general studies. He received a doctorate in psychology from UB in 1984.

Shiffner served as director of the mental health clinic at Buffalo General Hospital in the mid-1980s, and later joined the faculty of the UB Department of Family Medicine, where he taught behavioral sciences, including doctor-patient communication and mental health issues, to medical residents.

Once a month, he conducted “ethics rounds” with residents to teach them how to respond to ethical dilemmas.

Shiffner trained in family therapy with internationally known child psychiatrist Maurizio Andolfi, attending seminars and workshops throughout Europe.

He was a member of the New York State Psychological Association and chairman of the Psychological Association of Western New York’s insurance committee.

After a stroke in 2005, Shiffner took part in marathons and half-marathons benefiting foundations for breast cancer, stroke and multiple myelomas.

He enjoyed gardening and taking part in the annual Parkside Garden Walk. He also enjoyed golfing and was a longtime member of the Grover Cleveland Golf Course.
