Let us take you on a journey back to 1965 when three ingenious families—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—were searching for some good old-fashioned fun. Armed with an old badminton net, ping-pong paddles, and a plastic ball, they improvised a game that would soon become the sensation we know today as Pickleball. And guess what? The sport is even named after their adorable family dog, Pickles!

From those humble beginnings, Pickleball rapidly gained momentum, securing its place in the hearts of enthusiasts across the country. Between 1967 and 1976, this fantastic racquet sport flourished and garnered a devoted following. It wasn't long before the very first pickleball tournament took place in Tukwila, Washington, in 1976—a historic moment that ignited the competitive spirit within players far and wide. But the journey didn't end there!

In the years that followed, Pickleball evolved further, leading to the establishment of the United States Amateur Pickleball Association (USAPA). In 2009, the groundbreaking USAPA National Tournament thrilled players and fans alike in Buckeye, Arizona, and the following year, the sport gained international recognition with the establishment of the International Federation of Pickleball. Since then, Pickleball's popularity has skyrocketed, attracting new members, inspiring the birth of Pickleball companies, and captivating enthusiasts from every generation. So much so that we're thrilled to announce that Pickleball will be making its debut in either the 2023 Paris Olympics or the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics!

UB Recreation is bringing this incredible sport to the heart of the University at Buffalo community.

We're proud to introduce Pickleball as a credited academic course (REC112) available to both undergraduate and graduate students. This course is designed to help students develop basic knowledge and skills to play the sport of Pickleball. Through this course, students will learn technical skills and the fundamental rules, basic strategies, and course positioning for singles and doubles play. Step onto the badminton court lines in the Ed Wright Practice Facility this fall, where we've set up portable Pickleball nets, and embark on an adventure with twenty-four fellow students. Together, you'll learn the basics of this fantastic game while showcasing your own athletic prowess and skills!
