The University at Buffalo (UB) Intramural Sports program is excited to announce the return of its highly anticipated 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Set to take place in the Alumni Arena Ed Wright Practice Facility, also known as the Triple Gym, this tournament promises fast-paced action and intense competition. Before you hit the court, familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations that will govern this thrilling event.

The Details

Game Format

The 3-on-3 basketball variation featured in the UB Intramural Sports Tournament involves teams of three players competing on a single half-court with one backboard. The games are 12 minutes in length or conclude when the first team reaches 12 points. The scoring system is straightforward: 3-pointers are worth 2 points, and all other baskets earn the team 1 point.

Game Initiation

Before the tip-off, teams will engage in a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors to determine the initial possession. The winner will gain the privilege of starting with the ball on offense. It's a simple yet effective way to keep things fair and add an element of chance to the competition.

Checking the Ball

The ball must be checked before the start of the game and after any interruptions, such as steals, turnovers, made baskets, fouls, or out-of-bounds plays. The team in possession or last in possession will retain the ball after unusual stoppages, except after a made basket. Any attempts to disrupt the checking process will be penalized at the discretion of the officials.

No Make-it-Take-it

After a successful basket, the team that was on defense will start on offense from the top of the key. There is no make-it-take-it rule in effect, ensuring a more balanced and dynamic playing experience.

Fouls

Teams will be responsible for calling their own fouls. Common fouls result in the fouled team starting with the ball at the top of the key, and there are no free throws. The Intramural Director and staff have the authority to issue warnings, end games, or disqualify teams if continuous fouling is detrimental to fair play and the spirit of intramural sports.

Out-of-Bounds

When the ball is declared out-of-bounds, the game restarts at the top of the key, with possession awarded to the team that did not last touch the ball. The half-court line is considered an out-of-bounds line, and if the ball passes over the backboard, it is treated as an out-of-bounds violation.

Rebounds and Shooting

After a defensive rebound, players must take the ball beyond the furthest 3-point line with both feet before attempting a shot, regardless of whether the ball hit the rim or not. This rule adds an element of strategy and ensures a fair chance for both offensive and defensive plays.

Game Logistics

Teams are strongly advised to stay in the gym until they either lose their second game or complete all scheduled games for the day. Matches will begin promptly after the previous game concludes, and failure to be present when your team is called will result in a forfeiture.
