UB has been rated among the top military-friendly Tier 1 research institutions in the U.S. for 2021-22 by MilitaryFriendly.com.

The designation honors institutions that provide the best opportunities for veterans and their spouses by evaluating the many factors that help make colleges, universities and other institutions a good fit for military veterans and their families.

In addition to being considered a military-friendly school, institutions can be designated as being in the Top 10 or a gold, silver or bronze institution.

UB received a gold designation, coming within 10% of the 10th-ranked Tier 1 research institution.

Those institutions considered military-friendly were evaluated using public data sources and a survey completed by the school, as well as student survey data. Student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence and loan default rates also were taken into account.

More than 1,200 schools participated in the survey, which is open to all post-secondary schools that wish to participate. Tier 1 research institutions are doctoral degree-granting universities that engage in the highest research activity.

“This designation is an indication of the great work that so many on our campus do to help these students find success at UB,” says Dan Ryan, director of veteran services. “From the folks in Financial Aid who certify their GI Bill benefits, to the faculty who demonstrate flexibility as our veteran students are activated to serve their country, and the countless student support units that help students make meaningful connections to our campus and each other — it is gratifying to see the work of so many validated in this way.”

UB’s Office of Veteran Services is charged with helping student veterans — and their dependents — shift into civilian life, make the transition to college and be successful at UB. Office staff assists students with the paperwork necessary to obtain benefits and connects them to local and national groups that support veterans.

There are about 482 “military-connected” students at UB, which includes students who are veterans and those who remain in active service, as well as their dependents.

The 2021-2022 Military Friendly Schools list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found online at MilitaryFriendly.com.
