Together with Provost Zukoski, I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Venu Govindaraju as Interim Vice President for Research and Economic Development, effective September 13, 2014. The founding director of UB’s Center for Unified Biometrics and Sensors, Dr. Govindaraju is SUNY Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering.

One of the world’s foremost researchers in the areas of pattern recognition and biometrics, Dr. Govindaraju is a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR), and SPIE, the International Society of Optics and Photonics. As an internationally renowned scholar who has had a tremendous impact on our university’s research enterprise while making transformative contributions to his field at a global level, Dr. Govindaraju brings tremendous expertise to this interim leadership position.  We are fortunate to have the benefit of his leadership in this important capacity, and we are grateful for his willingness to undertake this key role.
