KSL Diagnostics is on a mission to preserve and grow laboratory medicine in Western New York

As reported by the Buffalo News, University at Buffalo collaborator KSL Diagnostics, a national reference laboratory with proprietary diagnostics and therapeutics, is working to preserve and bolster the region’s clinical laboratory medicine industry.

The company—born in 2018 after taking over Empire Genomics’ clinical lab—has been growing steadily in the last several years, employing more than 100 people worldwide, including about 60 in Western New York. After temporarily pivoting its focus during the Covid-19 pandemic to developing and processing Covid-19 tests, the company has been looking to build more local connections.

KSL has acquired smaller labs with rich histories in Western New York—including Beutner Laboratories and the Robert Guthrie Laboratory—and also opened a transplant immunology laboratory and became the exclusive transplant testing provider for Erie County Medical Center. It is a relationship that means KSL now plays a critical role in the transplant cases performed in Western New York.
