The Department of Geography offers the following graduate degree programs: Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MS), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The Department also offers courses that fulfill requirements for several Advanced Certificate programs. 

  • The Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts (B.A./M.A.) program is aimed at students interested in international economic and business geographies.
  • The Master of Arts (M.A.) program is aimed at students, who want to gain a strong background in both theoretical and applied aspects of geography and intend to pursue professional careers in, for example, local, regional or national planning agencies, engineering or environmental firms, and GIS service providers. We offer M.A. in Geography and M.A. in International Trade
  • The Master of Science (M.S.) program is aimed at students, who want to specialize in applications of analytical techniques in the field of geography and intend to pursue a doctoral degree or a career in research, development, and consulting. We offer M.S. in Geography and M.S. in GIS
  • The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program provides in-depth research and technical training and is primarily intended for those interested in careers in research and academia. The University at Buffalo is the only institution in the State University of New York system awarding Ph.D. degrees in Geography.
  • Advanced Certificates are multidisciplinary programs that can be pursued to supplement an existing graduate degree program or to complete coursework as a non-matriculated student.
