Since 2020, the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) has doubled down on its Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) initiatives, seeking both to contribute to calls to diversify the engineering and computer science workforce and also to develop innovative solutions to grand challenges that require engineering in order to achieve equity and justice. This presentation locates the question “What does it mean to engineer equity?” within the school, offering a bird’s eye view of our JEDI Initiatives as they show up in research projects, curricular development, community outreach, and the design of SEAS as an organization. As we work to engineer equity, SEAS is emerging as a change leader, unafraid of change and ready to adapt as we face new challenges.

About Kristen Moore
Dr. Kristen R. Moore is the inaugural Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Education. As a researcher, she investigates mundane injustices as they creep into professional, technical and scientific projects, with a particular focus on how design and communication constrain and enable social justice. Her scholarship has received numerous accolades, including the 2021 CCCC Best Book in Technical and Scientific Communication Award, the 2021 ASEE Best Diversity Paper Award, and the Joenk Award for Best Article in IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication.  Aside from her scholarly awards, she is also the recipient of the 2022-2023 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service, the 2021 SEAS JEDI Faculty Award, and the ACM SIGDOC Diana Award.

Moore received her PhD from Purdue University in 2012. After six years on the faculty at Texas Tech University, she came to the University at Buffalo in 2018, where she has helped establish the Department of Engineering Education and extend the scope and impact of JEDI work across SEAS.
