Marshall 34, UB 14

All-American candidate Byron Leftwich threw for a career-best 455 yards and accounted for three touchdowns in the first half as the Thundering Herd of Marshall defeated UB, 34-14, Saturday on Homecoming weekend before 12,438 fans in UB Stadium.

UB had three turnovers in the game, including a key fumble near the end of the first half.

Athletes of the Week

Derrick Gordon of the football team matched his career-best with 30 carries and set a career-high with 137 yards rushing in UB's 34-14 loss to Marshall on Saturday. Gordon, who started for injured tailback Marquis Dwarte, also scored a touchdown in the game, capping a 10-play, 66-yard drive.

Andrea Sullivan of the women's soccer team scored the winning goal in UB's 1-0 win over Ohio. Sullivan has three goals this season, third on the squad. Her six points rank her fourth on the team.

The Bulls' impressive touchdown drive that opened the second half made that fumble even more costly.

UB kept the momentum when junior cornerback Mike Lambert intercepted Leftwich at the UB 30-yard line. After a pair of completions by Bulls quarterback Joe Freedy took the ball to the Marshall 46, the drive eventually stalled. Placekicker Dallas Pelz missed a 41-yard field goal that would have pulled UB to within two touchdowns.

Leftwich went back to work after that, completing six straight passes, including a four-yard strike to Curtis Jones to make it 31-7. The Bulls hopes faded after another promising drive to the Marshall 17-yard line ended when a Freedy pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Orlando Washington.

UB's final score came on a 10-play, 66-yard drive capped by a two-yard touchdown burst by Gordon.

But the Bulls could not continue their winning ways, as they dropped a match to Western Michigan Broncos at Alumni Arena to begin the weekend.

After winning game one by a 31-29 score, the Bulls lost three straight games by scores of 30-25, 30-25 and 30-17.

In other action during the weekend, UB dropped a three-game match to Ball State Sunday in Alumni Arena, 30-20, 33-31, 30-25. With the loss, UB's record drops to 4-13 overall and 0-8 in the MAC.
