Football

Akron 49, UB 14

The University of Akron took advantage of a depleted and frustrated UB team and scored a 49-14 football victory Saturday in Akron.

The Bulls played without four starters for most of the game and Akron took advantage of first-half miscues to pull away from Buffalo. The problem was compounded, said head coach Craig Cirbus, as the team lost its composure, which led to costly penalties and four turnovers.

Quarterback Joe Freedy struggled throughout the game. He completed just 9 of 26 passes for 100 yards and was sacked three times. Senior tight end Brandon Shaughnessy had three receptions for 44 yards. The UB running game was led by redshirt freshman Marquis Dwarte, who had 24 carries for 163 yards.

The UB defense was paced by senior safety Tory Smith, who had eight solo stops, while senior linebacker Marcus Cole had four solo stops and his first career interception. Redshirt freshman Lamar Wilcher had three tackles for loss.

Shaughnessy, Pruce Make Academic Team

Seniors Brandon Shaughnessy and David Pruce have been named members of the 23-player Verizon District I Football Academic All-American team. Shaughnessy, a history major with a 3.24 grade point average, currently has caught a pass in 11 straight games and ranks fourth on the team with 21 receptions for 240 yards (11.4 per catch). Of his 21 receptions this year, 11 have gone for first downs. Pruce has earned a spot on the District I team for the second time. A political science major with a 3.53 GPA, he is a member of UB's Taurus Aureus (Golden Bull) Society, for UB athletes with a cumulative 3.5 GPA or higher while earning a varsity letter. Pruce has started a team-high 35 straight games for the Bulls and this year has helped UB average 310.3 yards of offense per game.

Athletes of the Week

Marquis Dwarte of the football team rushed for a career-high 163 yards on 24 carries in UB's 49-14 loss at Akron. The redshirt fresh-man's 100-yard effort was the third time that UB has had a rusher go over 100 yards in a game as the Bulls rushed for 243 yards on the game-their second-best effort of the season.

Abby Delia of the women's swim team was a double winner in the Bulls' 185-115 win over St. Bona-venture, the first time UB has defeated the Bonnies since 1989. Delia, who transferred from St. Bonaventure prior to the season, took the 100 backstroke in 58.53 and the 100 freestyle in 54.27, and was part of both of UB's winning relay squads.

Volleyball

Syracuse 3, UB 2
Akron 3, UB 1
Marshall 3, UB 0

The women's volleyball team lost to the visiting Syracuse Orangewomen on Nov. 8, dropping the match 15-4, 15-11, 9-15, 9-15, 15-12.

The Orangewomen seemed in control of the match after taking the opening two games, but the Bulls came back to tie the match. In game four, Buffalo broke an 8-8 tie by outscoring the Orange 7-1 for the 15-9 victory that forced a fifth game. A kill by Lindsay Matikosh gave Buffalo a 7-6 lead in the final game, but Syracuse slowly pulled away as a result of a combination of kills and UB errors, and the Orangewomen took the game and the match with a 15-12 win.

The Bulls lost a four-game match to the visiting Akron Zips in Alumni Arena on Friday. The Bulls also lost to Marshall in Alumni Arena, 11-15, 11-15, 1-15, on Saturday. The Bulls' record falls to 4-26 overall and 0-17 in the MAC.
