Mark Ashwill, director of the World Languages Institute and Fulbright Program advisor, has contributed to several new publications for the U.S. Department of Education as a writer and editor, including: "To Sum it Up: Case Studies of Education in Germany, Japan and the United States;" "The Educational System in the United States: Case Study Findings;" "The Educational System in Germany, Case Study Findings," and "Contemporary Research in the United States, Germany and Japan on Five Education Issues." The volumes were published by the National Institute on Student Achievement, Curriculum and Assessment. The Case Study Project, administered by the University of Michigan's Center for Human Growth and Development, is a component of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study.

Anne Marie De Luca's Gold Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) for the "Upbeat" series on WBFO, heads the list of 1999 CASE awards received by staff members at the radio station and the offices of Publications and News Services. CASE Silver Award winners were Debra Bennett and David Riley of the Publications Office in the Special Program Publications Packages category for the Preview Day campaign package; Rebecca Bernstein, William Wieners, Michele Kinnamon, Ross Winston and Kevin Eye of the Electronic Media unit in the Interactive Media category, Best in Class for eUB, and Arthur Page, Rebecca Bernstein, Kevin Eye and John Kavanagh of News Services and Electronic Media in the category World Wide Web Sites, for the News Services Web site. Mark Scott of WBFO received a CASE Bronze Award for his report on "Coming Out Day at UB." News Services and Electronic Media staff members also won second place among Large Scale Projects in University Services' 1998 Service Excellence for the Online UB Calendar of Events. The winners were Arthur Page, Rebecca Bernstein, William Wieners, Michele Kinnamon, Emily Chang, Barry Kiesler, Ross Winston and Navin Jain.

Gary A. Baker, a doctoral student in the Department of Chemistry, has been named the 1999 Graduate Student Award winner by the Society of Applied Spectroscopy. The award recognizes his outstanding research in the field of spectroscopy. Baker will receive the award at the 1999 Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) meeting in Vancouver, B.C., Oct. 26.

Mary Ann Jezewski, associate professor in the School of Nursing, is the 1999 recipient of the Oncology Nursing Education Research Grant from the ONS Foundation/Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. The $7,500 grant is designed to stimulate quality research in oncology-nursing education. Jezewski's research is entitled "Oncology Nurses and Advance Directives." A fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, Jezewski is a member of the American Anthropological Association.

Carolyn A. Ingram, a doctoral candidate in the UB School of Nursing and an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., is the 1999 recipient of the ONS Foundation/Smith Kline Beecham Oncology Research Grant. The $8,500 grant is designed to promote oncology-nursing research in the area of nausea and vomiting management. Ingram's research is entitled "Predictors of Weight Gain in Women with Early Stage Breast Cancer." Ingram serves as associate editor of the Canadian Oncology Nursing Journal..

Timothy D. McKernan and Michael P. Vosseller, students in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, won second place in the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) International Student Research Undergraduate Competition held recently by the Special Interest Group in Computer Science Education in New Orleans. The students' project, "Performance Improvement in CORBA Applications," was selected for significance of research.

John Bis, associate dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, has been named to a six-member committee that will review proposals to privatize Niagara Falls International airport and recommend whether any should be accepted.
