Football

UB 40, Lock Haven 17
A balanced offensive attack and four touchdowns by junior fullback Josh Roth led the Bulls to a 40-17 win over Lock Haven University before a record crowd of 20,760 Saturday night in UB Stadium.

The loss snapped a nine-game losing streak dating back to last year for the Bulls. Buffalo pounded out 274 yards on the ground, with Roth gaining a career-high 72 yards and senior David Hinson added a career-best 91 yards on 17 carries. Senior Antonio Perry led the Bulls with eight tackles, while senior Dan Poulsen had six tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Volleyball

UB 0, Northeastern 3
UB 3, Lafayette College 0

The UB women's volleyball team defeated St. Bonaventure Sept. 9 , 15-6, 15-8, 15-10, and went 2-1 this past weekend in Ithaca at the Cornell Big Red Invitational.

On Friday, the Bulls split 1-1, losing to Northeastern in a three-game sweep in Match 2 of the invitational and defeated host Cornell in Match 5 of the day, 3-1. The Bulls lost to Northeastern 15-6, 15-9, 15-6. In the victory over Cornell, the Bulls defeated the Big Red, 15-11, 15-11, 15-13. On Saturday, the Bulls defeated Lafayette College in a three-game sweep, 15-1, 15-0, 15-9.

Averaging 16 assists and five digs per match, Junior Somer Deschambault was named to the Big Red Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Women's Soccer

UB 3, Canisius 2
UB 3, Furman 1
UB 4, Liberty 0

The Bulls maintained their perfect record on Sept. 9 as they defeated visiting Canisius, 3-2, and claimed the 1998 Umbro Classic Kickoff title by downing host Furman, 3-1, on Friday and Liberty, 4-0, on Saturday. Heather Collins was named the tournament MVP, while both sisters Paula and Julie Listrani and midfielder Tara Donahue made the All-Tournament Team.

Men's Soccer

UB 4, St. Joseph's (Pa.) 1
UB 1, WVU 4

The Bulls men's soccer team took part in West Virginia University's Mountaineer Classic this past weekend, upending St. Joseph's (Pa.), 4-1, on Saturday, and losing to host WVU 4-1, on Sunday.

Junior forward Steve Butcher scored two second-half goals and freshman midfielder John Shannon came off the bench to lead Coach Astudillo's team to victory on Saturday. UB goalkeeper Jim Schoenberg had six saves for the winners.

Butcher tallied the Bulls' lone goal in Sunday's match against undefeated tournament champion WVU. Buffalo finished in second place out of the four teams in the tournament.

Women's Tennis

UB 7, Cleveland State 2
UB 1, Bucknell 8

The women's tennis team was in action at home this past weekend and won against Cleveland State, 7-2, on Saturday and lost to Bucknell, 8-1, on Sunday.

Men's Tennis

UB 7, Niagara 0
UB 3, Marist 4

The men's tennis team split their first two matches of the season, defeating Niagara, 7-0, on Friday and losing to Marist, 4-3, on Saturday.

Cross Country

UB 15, Niagara 50
Junior Marie Macander paced the UB harriers to a 15-50 victory over visiting Niagara University by setting a new school record of 18:50.1 in the 5,000-meter run. The UB course record previously was held by Karen Lilly who finished the 1997 UB Invitational in 19:08. Senior Sam Burroughs (24:04) edged out teammate junior Patrick Nolan (27:05.2) for top honors in the men's 8,000-meter race.

The Bulls claimed the top five finisher spots in the women's race and the top seven in the men's race.
