Paul McKenna, associate professor of art and former chair of the Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences, has an essay on Elbert Hubbard of the Roycroft Movement included in a new edition of the "American National Biography," published by Oxford University Press under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies.
Shadi Nazarian, assistant professor of architecture in the School of Architecture and Planning, has been awarded a 1998/99 County Initiative Program Sponsored Individual Artist grant for $1,200 from the Arts Council of Buffalo and Erie County. The grant was used for her installation, "Thresholds," recently presented in the CEPA Gallery. Nazarian was recognized at the council's 13th annual Arts Awards Program held in the Hyatt Regency.
Harvey Breverman, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences, received the Benjamin Altman Prize March 17 in a ceremony at the National Academy Museum's 174th Annual Exhibition in New York City. The $1,500 prize was awarded "for a figure painting by an American-born citizen." Breverman was elected to the Academy by his peers in 1992. The membership includes Jasper Johns, Andrew Wyeth, Jim Dine and Helen Frankenthaler, among others.
Robert W. Heller, professor emeritus in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy in the Graduate School of Education, was honored recently with the Friend of the Council award for 1999 given by the New York State Council of School Superintendents and with the 1999 Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of School Administrators, presented at their annual meeting in New Orleans.
Rakesh Nagi, associate professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, has received the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, "conferred in recognition of significant achievements and leadership in the field of manufacturing engineering as a young engineer."
