Athletes of the Week
Wrestler John Eschenfelder and swimmer Dan Hickey were co-athletes of the week for their performances at the Mid-American Conference Championships in their respective sports.
Eschenfelder took first place in the heavyweight division, going a perfect 3-0 in the tournament and improving to 24-9 on the year. With that first-place finish, he also qualifies for the NCAA Championships, to be held at Penn State University today through Saturday.
Hickey was a first-place finisher in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.76. He was also a part of the 400-free relay team that finished in fourth place.
Swimming
Men's
Finished 6th in MAC Championships
The men's swimming team competed in the MAC Championships and placed sixth, finishing with 260.0 points. Miami took first place.
The Bulls' Dan Hickey was named to the all conference first team for his performances. Hickey took first place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.76. He also finished sixth in the 100 freestyle and ninth in the 500 freestyle. In addition, Hickey was a member of the 400-free relay team that finished fourth.
Other top finishers for UB were Eric Stimson who placed fifth in the 200 backstroke and sixth in the 100 backstroke, and John Nilles who finished sixth in the 50 freestyle.
The 400-free relay team of Hickey, Nilles, Brian Berthelotte and Josh Pun placed highest of all the UB relay teams, finishing in fourth with a time of 3:05.45.
Wrestling
Finished fourth at MAC Championships
The wrestling team placed fourth at the MAC Championships, held March 5 at Northern Illinois University.
The Bulls finished with 55.5 points. Central Michigan University won with 124.5, Ohio University was second with 60.5 and Kent State University third with 56.0.
UB's John Eschenfelder was the lone champion in the heavyweight division, defeating Neal Harvey of Ohio, 3-2, to take first place.
The Bulls had three wrestlers finish in second place: Gary Cooper at 165-pounds, earning co-Freshman-of-the-Year honors; Brian Schaal at 125-pounds and Jacob Schaus at 174-pounds.
Three UB wrestlers-Schaal, Schaus and Eschenfelder-all qualified for the NCAA Championships, and Cooper was selected as an alternate. The NCAA Championships will be held today through Saturday at Penn State.
