Elliott Middleton, Jr., 73, professor of medicine and pediatrics
A memorial service was held March 12 in Chebeague Island United Methodist Church, Maine, for Elliott Middleton, Jr., 73, former professor of medicine and pediatrics in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Middleton, an allergist and researcher who had served as director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Internal Medicine, died March 7 in Maine Medical Center, Portland, after a brief illness. He had lived in Maine since his retirement from UB in 1995.
Middleton, who had served as director of clinical services and research at the Children's Asthma Research Institute and Hospital in Denver and associate clinical professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado, became professor of medicine and pediatrics at UB in 1976. During his 19 years at UB, he contributed extensively to research on asthma and immunology and recently investigated the biological effects of dietary plant compounds on health and disease.
An international lecturer, Middleton was a past president of the American Academy of Allergy Immunology. From 1983-88 he was editor of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He also was editor-in-chief for the first five published editions of the textbook "Allergy: Principles and Practice."
He received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Allergy and Immunology in 1991. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, which he co-founded, and the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Middleton, who attended Princeton University under the Navy's World War II accelerated V-12 program, completed his studies in 1946 and received a degree in chemistry in 1947. He received his medical degree in 1950 from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.
