Football

UB 35, Morgan State 17
The Bulls defeated visiting Morgan State, 35-17, in front of a Homecoming crowd of 19, 854 in UB Stadium.

The Bulls' balanced offensive attack of 500 total yards was led by wide receiver Kali Watkins, the leading receiver for the day (six receptions for 158 yards), and quarterback Chad Salisbury (13-of-14 for 270 yards).

The two combined for three passes that resulted in touchdowns, including a 52-yard bomb at 4:35 in the first quarter. Watkins' three TD receptions was a career-high for the senior tri-captain.

Running back Derrick Gordon, the Bulls' rushing leader (nine carries for 91 yards), struck first for the Bulls with a one-yard TD run only 2:42 into the game. He left the game in the second quarter with a sprained foot.

Freshman running back David Schmidli earned his first career TD on a 13-yard run late in the third. Schmidli finished with 35 yards rushing, while fullback Josh Roth added 63 yards on 10 carries.

Junior linebacker Josh Trexler led the defense for Coach Craig Cirbus' squad with 14 tackles. Cornerback Carlos Spencer and linebackers Antonio Perry and Chris Shelly had nine stops each, while defensive lineman Bob Dzvonick added eight tackles and a quarterback sack.

Volleyball

UB 0, Northern Illinois 3
UB 0, Ball State 3
The women's volleyball team was unable to get a Mid-American Conference win while on the road this weekend, losing in straight sets to both Northern Illinois (7-15, 8-15, 5-15) and Ball State (2-15, 7-15, 5-15).

Freshman outside hitter Keri Shiels had 11 kills against Northern Illinois and 12 against Ball State and eight digs in each match.

Soccer Women's

UB 1, Toledo 0 UB 0
Eastern Michigan 0
The UB Bulls women's soccer team blanked visiting Toledo, 1-0, on Oct. 8to snap a three-match losing streak and tied visiting Eastern Michigan in a scoreless, double-overtime grudge match.

In the game against MAC competitor Toledo, sophomore forward Paula Listrani scored on the first shot of the game to seal the victory for Coach Jean Tassy's squad. Freshman goalkeeper Jaime Adams recorded her fourth shutout of the 1998 campaign in the win.

Adams made 14 stops in the scoreless match against MAC force Eastern Michigan on Oct. 11.

Men's

UB 2, Kentucky 4
UB 2, Miami (Ohio) 1
The men's soccer team dropped its Oct. 9 home match against Kentucky, 4-2, and triumphed over visiting Miami (Ohio), 2-1, in overtime.

Against Kentucky, sophomore forward Steve Butcher, the MAC's top scorer (13 goals, four assists), and freshman forward Brain McCallion netted goals for the Bulls in their first MAC loss of the 1998 campaign.

On Oct. 10, Butcher netted the overtime game-winning goal to secure the MAC victory for Coach John Astudillo. Freshman Luke Bakun scored the goal that evened up the game in the first-half.

Cross Country

The men's and women's cross country teams participated in the Albany Invitational on Oct. 10. The women placed second (93 points) out of 19 squads. Senior Jen Folckemer was Coach Dick Barry's top finisher (13th, 19:32). Junior Marie Macander followed closely behind sophomore Eileen Rose as they finished 16th and 15th, respectively.

The men's squad accumulated 205 points for a sixth-place finish out of a field of 22 teams. Freshman John Fritts placed 30th for the Bull's top finish.

Athlete of the Week

Sophomore forward Steve Butcher, the MAC's top scorer (13 goals, four assists) netted a goal in the squad's first MAC loss on Friday against Kentucky, 4-2. He also scored the overtime gamewinner

(2-1) against Miami (Ohio).

For the women's soccer team, freshman goalkeeper Jaime Adams recorded her fourth shutout of the 1998 campaign in the MAC win against Toledo. The victory snapped a three-game losing slump for the Bulls. She made 14 stops against Eastern Michigan to preserve a scoreless tie.
